Monday Music – 24 October 2011

“Propped carelessly on the mantlepiece was a postcard of Millais’ ‘Autumn Leaves’: the pale light fading, the leaves burning, the trees receding, the girls’ faces touched by the light.”

STAL – We Are Two
STAL is a Parisian electrogaze project from former M83 guitar player Pierre-Marie Maulini.  This is the kind of serene song with which you can float around an art gallery or museum and pretend everyone else doesn’t exist; that it’s just you, the works and the walls.

BOA – Push (mp3)
On Saturday I walked past a girl, she smiled at me and I thought, after a few seconds’ deliberation, one time too many.  I jogged after her, tapped her shoulder and delivered a breathless request for a coffee date.  I hadn’t much clue what I was saying, but that didn’t seem to really matter.  Equally, she said she had a boyfriend, but seemed really pleased simply to have been asked.  We prolonged the conversation for a few seconds, but awkwardness was imminent so she made an excuse and left.  I felt fantastic – as if I’d temporarily thrown off some shackles I was previously unaware of having been bound by.  This song by emerging Gothenburg band BOA carries a similarly carefree feeling.

Southern Shores – Meridian
“We basked in the sun like sharks.  I could hardly even remember what winter was like.” (out now on Cascine)

Twin Sister – Kimmi In A Rice Field
One of the many joys of living in Canonbury is that the very attractive Gwenno from the Pipettes works in one of the local establishments.  In a non-stalkerish way, I recently discovered her blog, which is full of good music.  Including this stand-out from the excellent new Twin Sister album…

Young Marble Giants – Final Day
… and this short 1981 potboiler from the post-punk Welsh band of yore.
