There’s a bit of a Scouse theme today to this, the one weekly blog where Some Of It Was True! drops its London-only focus…

King Krule – The Noose of Jah City
“I pick at the scab and I know I’ll make it worse but that only intensifies my longing, my need, my compulsion. The dull candlelight flickers conspiratorially as I scrabble away, my fingernails like vultures greedily let loose on a juicy carcass they’ve been eyeing up for hours.” (via SEXBEAT; out on True Panther)

Outfit – Vehicles
The first of tonight’s Liverpool acts, Outfit make elegant and deliciously mellow alt-pop; songs that float along without getting anywhere, and yet that directionlessness suits them perfectly, comes to define them, is them. These are the easy, down-tempo sounds to which, if you’re not on your caffeinated guard, whole floaty afternoons can be lost.
Bird – Phantoms
Also from Merseyside, Bird make gothic, chanty pop, complete with squeaky violins and throbbing drums: it wouldn’t be out of place in Kate Bush’s secret cellar or at a grimly intent witches’ coven.
The Sea Around Us – Walls (mp3)
The first few seconds of this have a decided Simon & Garfunkel / 70s American choral-rock feel; then the bass crackles into action, and henceforth you, the lucky listener, are left with a stop/start, crash/burn fidgety fish of a track from this new Philadelphia quartet, one that may just appeal to Grizzly Bear fans but really also anyone who likes a little, well, nice mess. That doesn’t necessarily sound like a compliment, but it sure is one.
De La Montaña – Golden Soul (mp3)
Three-quarters brow-soothing chillwave, one quarter synth banger, what I like best about this track from Madison Velding-VanDam’s debut album, ‘Postmoden Whorled’, is its restraint: it’s never OTT, always considered and gently wonderful.
