Elessie

Luckily I’ve watched Skins, so I know how precocious 17-year-olds can be.  Even so, the four of ‘em in London rock act Elessie sure don’t do things normally.  Listening to their (free) debut EP, Messily, I kept having to jump back to the start of a track to check I hadn’t inadvertantly changed bands.  Album opener You Don’t Speak For Us kicks off as an ornery punk song, all anarchic vocals and guitars droning like angry wasps, before abruptly segueing into an unexpectedly pretty mid-section jam.  Next effort Eton Butchers is an attractive indie number, lightened with perky hooks, that concludes in screeching chaos (mp3), while Hockney starts off phlegmatic and ends depraved. The final tune, Water, is merely punch-drunk and patient by contrast.  All told, it’s a slightly messy, perhaps-idea-heavy EP, but one bursting with delicious sounds, and with talent.
