Ellie Goulding – Hanging On

Full marks for ambition.  Ellie Goulding, favoured singer of William and Kate, has chosen to cover Active Child‘s magnificent Hanging On as a way to build the hype around her second album, due in autumn.  It’s an exceptionally hard song to take on, so high and pure are Pat Grossi’s vocals in the original, and you’ve consequently got to admire her guts – most singers would just plump for something far safer.  The end result is mixed, though: Goulding proves she can climb up to those lofty vocal peaks, but it all sounds a bit eyes-closed, please-make-it-stop; ironically, as if she herself is hanging on.  As for the rap section featuring Tinie Tempah?  Well, it’s… unexpected.  Hmm.  See what you think – the original’s below, too, so you can compare and contrast.
